Throughout Crete there are many churches with wonderful frescoes showing the evolution and trends of religious art from the first Byzantine years until the School of Cretan Painting. However, there are some areas where the number of these temples is really impressive.

In Heraklion there are some of the oldest monasteries of Crete, such as the great monasteries of Agarathos, Palianis in Venerato, Vrontissiou in Vorizia, Agios Georgios Epanosifis, Gorgolainis, Agios Panteleimonas in Fodele, Odigitria in Siva, Kallergi in Kastelli, Arvi, Agia Pelagia in Achlada and Apezanon in Antiskari. The area west of Heraklion is a lively religious enclave, as the Savatians, Rogdia, Agia Fotini, Pantanassa and Agioi Theodoroi monasteries operate at a short distance. At the foothills of the Lassithi Mountains, Panagia Kardiotissa and Gouverniotissa dominate, while in Psiloritis there are the monasteries of Agia Irini in Krousonas and Agii Pantes in Loutraki. The Monastery of Agia Marina in Voni is the largest pilgrimage of Crete. The monasteries of Kalyviani, St. John of Anopolis and many others are also worth mentioning. Apart from the great religious center of Mirabello, the area of Avdou and Episkopi Pediados in Heraklion is scattered with monuments of outstanding artistic and religious value.
